floret An architecture of belonging.

A trivial physical artifact produced a memory that survived forty years.

Floret exists to explain that sentence.

Observation

The artifact was a carnation, delivered at school. The tradition behind it has run for decades with no digital infrastructure and no network effects.

Question

Do small acts of recognition produce durable changes in connection and belonging?

Floret calls this field Meaning Durability.

Design

Valentine’s Day gives people permission to send an aggressively average carnation. FlowerGram removes the need for permission: any day, for no reason at all.

Method

The first pilot is designed for a single campus. Only people who opt in can send or receive.

The success threshold is set before anyone joins. It cannot be revised. Those who begin least connected are tracked as their own group. Their results can stop the pilot.

Measures are taken at four points.

  1. T0On joining
  2. T1On receiving a carnation
  3. T2Two weeks later
  4. T3At the end of term
